SSM Industries - OSHA 1910.269 Standard Revision

The forward thinking of Tennessee based SSM Industries Inc. (SSM) has created an opportunity for employers to ensure compliance in the safety plan of their employees. The OSHA 1910.269 Standard Revision has been published and effective July 11, 2014. SSM's Pro-CFR®12 CAL, fabric offers an increased measure of safety in line with the OSHA 1910.269 Standard. It is the industries' lightest protective fabric with a high Arc Thermal Protection Value (ATPV). Pro-CFR® 12 CAL is a made in the USA, 100% flame resistant 6.25 osy, cotton knit fabric with a 12 cal/cm2 arc rating.

Important to industry employers is the fact that they must now pay for their employee protection and hazard assessments will be required by January 1, 2015. SSM's fabric is a single layer product of durable flame resistant cotton. It provides 12 cal protection with the look and feel of a retail garment fabric. Gone are the days of non-FR, as safety and protection are paramount to the success of any company.

SSM has had great success with Pro-CFR® 12 CAL in the industrial utility market. The fabric meets all requirements for the Revised Standard (ie. non-melting, non-ignitable, flame resistant clothing fabric) and targets electric power generation, transmission and distribution employees. Within SSM Industries' line of Pro-CFR® flame resistant cotton, Pro-CFR® 12 CAL provides a high comfort level, is produced in brilliant color options and has the highest arc rating in the lightest weight flame resistant cotton fabric available in the industry. This single-layer 12 cal rated fabric will help employers ensure a high level of protection for a vast percentage of industry hazards.

SSM Industries - A Proud USA Manufacturer

SSM Industries, Inc., values their "Made in the USA" heritage and label. As a cutting edge fabric manufacturer, founded and family owned since 1982, SSM caters to patriotic customers and serves a wide market looking to buy "Made in the USA".

Under the leadership of Scott Hilleary, President, CEO, SSM Industries makes its mark as a full service safety and protective fabric manufacturer.  Spinning, Knitting, Weaving, Dyeing and Finishing all take place under one roof, in the USA.

In a recent Q & A, Hilleary presented the benefits of being a fabric manufacturer with a made in the USA label.

"The reason that made in the USA is vital in fabric is that, unlike most if not all aspects of garment assembly, the quality and particularly the protective properties of fabrics are not visible to the end user.  If you pick up a garment that is supposed to be life and limb protective, can you tell by looking that it is flame retardant?  Or, if it is a treated fabric, that it was treated to be durable to normal washing? Or, exactly if the fiber content indicated by the label is in fact what was used?  Other than color, what textile properties can actually be seen?  Weight? Strength? Shrinkage?"

"Our advantage is that SSM Industries has long been known for its technical problem solving in knit fabrics and in the last several years adding woven fabrics. We produce our fabrics vertically meaning that we have an unprecedented array of yarn and fabric formation, performance fiber dyeing, and application of functional finishes under our own roof, at our disposal, available to develop highly technical and customized solutions for a demanding, performance oriented industry.  And, with recent plant and equipment investments, we are able to provide this technical expertise in a very cost competitive offering."

Hilleary believes, "SSM's technical superiority has made a dramatic difference in the military's ability to clothe our soldiers in the best protective clothing systems ever offered, and this has certainly been apparent in our revenue growth.  We now believe that our recent investments in plant and equipment will allow us to offer a meaningful combination of this same technical prowess and cost effective delivery to the protective work wear market."

SSM Industries provides many made in the USA fabric options including Pro-CFR ® 12 Cal, the lightest weight, highest Arc Rated Flame Resistant Cotton made in a comfortable knit construction and in brilliant color options and, Pro-CFR ® Fleece, 10.5 osy, a fabric perfect for the cool weather months and light enough for the southern climate.

SSM is also providing the latest industrial education to their team. Wendell Witt, National Accounts Manager for Industrial Work Wear, had the benefit of attending the North Carolina State University week-long ”Textile 101” course. SSM Industries, Inc.,  Rolls Out World's First

Tennessee based SSM Industries, Inc., produces the world's first flame resistant, moisture management, antimicrobial cotton fabric. This carefully engineered fabric, Pro-CFR® + TransDRY™ was created for use in the industrial, military, fire service, and racing markets.

Summit Work Apparel Vice President, Alan Habash, recently stated, "The application of wicking technology has been used in the athletic apparel industry and now SSM has brought this same technology to the flame resistant world. This cotton fabric is comfortable and breathable and our customers are responding."

The industry was calling for more comfortable options in safety apparel. SSM Industries moved quickly to create a comfortable moisture management fabric. Safety professionals benefit from this new fabric that combines three technologies, Pro-CFR® Flame Resistant Cotton, TransDRY™ Moisture Management Technology and Antimicrobial/Anti-odor technologies. These technologies provide comfortable protection in one fabric with moisture management for faster drying. The TransDRY™ Technology is engineered into the fabric and, like the flame resistance and antimicrobial technology, will not wash out. Combined, these three technologies continually keep the user comfortable and protected.

The electrical utility, electrical maintenance, petro-chemical industry and fire service users have all taken note of this first of its kind, flame resistant cotton fabric. SSM's line of flame resistant cotton, Pro-CFR® + TransDRY™, will provide comfort, brilliant color options, and high arc ratings to industry users.

Look for this innovation and others from SSM, at the NSC trade show in Orlando, October 22-24, or at the IFAI trade show in Boston, November 7-9, 2012.

SSM Industries' Lightweight Flame Resistant Cotton Innovation

Tennessee based SSM Industries, Inc. introduces PRO-CFR® 12 CAL, the industries' lightest weight flame resistant cotton fabric to achieve an Arc Thermal Protection Value (ATPV) of 12 cal/cm2. PRO-CFR® 12 CAL is a 6.25 osy fabric, made in the USA, flame resistant cotton knit fabric with a 12 calorie arc rating. This fabric innovation offers an increased measure of safety and comfort.

The utility industry has been calling for a single layer clothing solution with a 12 cal/cm2 ATPV rating. To help meet that need, SSM Industries, Inc. developed the fabric with the most protection offering the highest level of comfort resulting from the lightest weight. Layering flame resistant clothing has been the traditional method for reaching a desired arc rating to protect against arc flash injuries. This layering method has been costly. SSM Industries, Inc. has once again answered with a light weight, flame resistant cotton knit product in a single layer fabric option available in many colors.

National Safety Apparel (NSA) Director of Sales, Duane Siders, recently stated, "NSA has incorporated the SSM 12 knit fabric (PRO-CFR® 12 CAL) into our new line of FR Cotton Classic shirts in a variety of colors and styles. Initial feedback from customers has been extremely positive. People love the fact the our shirts are a very high quality garment that is Made in the USA, and really enjoy the outstanding comfort and feel that this great new fabric provides, compared to other fabrics they have evaluated in the marketplace. With the 12 cal/cm rating, this shirt is a perfect fit with utilities looking for a single-layer 12 cal. offering."

SSM Industries' flame resistant cotton, PRO-CFR® 12 CAL will provide comfort, is produced in brilliant color options and has a high arc rating in the lightest weight flame resistant cotton fabric available in the industry.
